Day 29 Sydney to Port Douglas

We were picked up in a van along with a US couple from Columbia Mo. and taken to the domestic terminal for a Jet Star flight - a no frills service where everything cost extra. We flew over 3 hours north, the same as Denver or Dallas. It gave us a feel of how big this country really is. The country below began as flat farm land cultivated and waiting to grow; as we went north it became more green and hilly. The road to Port Douglas is a typical sea side mountain road, steep cliffs, jagged rocks and palm tree lined sandy beaches, like Hawaii or the California coast, but NO people, only a few scattered motels and RV parks.

Port Douglas is a vacation destination town and our hotel is smack in the middle of hill side. It has one entry on the marina level and another on the 4th floor onto a main street. Our room has it all, a covered patio with a hot tub, grill and dining table as well as a washer/drier - everything needed for a long stay. We are here for 5 nights and looking forward to enjoying what the hotel and town have to offer. We started well with dinner at a Chinese place Bill Clinton liked - it must have been before the vegan experiment.
