Day 47 Dubai

A second relaxing morning with Isaac and Yvette before dropping her off so she could set up a conference scheduled the next day. The 3 of us did more exploring the wonders of Dubai, starting with the souk located in a magnificent building where you can take water taxis to other shops and restaurants.  Nothing like the chaos of other middle eastern souks we have seen before.

The Souk and a cool building:

Isaac drove us past the other places he has lived in the past 2 years and then to a great lunch.  We went to a grocery store in a mall that rivals any in the US for selection and quality at comparable prices.  We were amazed at the novelty of architectural styles and shapes.  Pictures tell the story the best.
One building twists 90 degrees from bottom to top:

one is round like a thick plate standing on edge:

one is a leaning building that holds the world record for leaning:

We think it looks like the Jetsons’ City from the cartoon:

We picked up Yvette and went to Dubai Mall, the largest in the world.  There is a fetish all over the UAE for the biggest, tallest, fastest, etc.  The mall has a large pond next to a mile high building (naturally, the tallest in the world) where they have a fabulous sound-light-fountain show every night.  Incredible!

Even the crabs enjoyed themselves, waiting for the show:

The mall also has a huge aquarium with a glass tunnel that runs thru at the bottom where you can walk thru to see the fish from a very different perspective.

We went back home and walked across the street for a great meal in their favorite Italian restaurant.

  1. I love the power necessary to make those fountain shows. I saw one similar, but smaller in Vegas. It's a really neat feat of engineering.
Speaking of which, the spinning building is awesome. I'd love to see the inside when it's finished.
The Crabstons look to be enjoying a beautiful sunset with the tallest building in the world on the horizon. What a neat honeymoon for them!
